Kampala – The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has sounded the alarm over a rising trend of expired products being sold to consumers across the country.

According to Sylvia Kirabo, Head of Marketing and Public Relations at UNBS, the agency has noted an increase in the sale of expired products in wholesale shops, retail shops, and supermarkets.

“Some businesses are tampering with dates and labels on products to avoid losses, but this is putting consumer health at risk,” Kirabo said. “We urge the public to work with us and the police to report any suspicious products.” She added

In addition to expired products, UNBS has also identified other issues, including the sale of underweight products, particularly in the bread, cement, tea leaves, and sugar industries. Some products also lack the UNBS quality mark, which attests to the product’s safety and authenticity.

The agency is urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious products to UNBS on their toll-free numbers 0800133133 or 0800233233 or to the nearest police station.

“Let’s work together to ensure the safety and quality of products in the market,” Kirabo said.
