Kampala – The death toll from the Kiteezi landfill tragedy has risen to 30, as six more bodies were retrieved today, Wednesday 14th August 2024, according to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Spokesperson.

“Today, the operation resumed in high gear and work was not interrupted. Today, the team retrieved six dead bodies by 1730 hours. This makes a total of 30 bodies so far recovered,” Onyango said.

He noted that the operation to retrieve dead bodies is progressing well, with no major issues reported.

Meanwhile, Onyango says the Registration Committee has presented its preliminary findings, revealing that 120 people are currently sheltered at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground, while 39 people are still missing, including community members and garbage collectors. Additionally, 33 homes are suspected to have been covered by debris on August 10th.

In a separate development, police arrested five suspects who were impersonating victims of the tragedy to receive compensation and relief items.

The KMP police spokesperson says the suspects are being held at Kiteezi Police Station on charges of impersonation.

He noted that the authorities continue to work tirelessly to retrieve all the bodies and provide support to the affected families.
