Lwengo – Six people lost their lives, and 37 others were injured in a devastating road accident that occurred on the Masaka-Mbarara highway in Kirumba, Kyanzanga, Lwengo district early Monday morning.

According to Michael Kananura, Traffic Police spokesperson, the crash involving a Gateway bus (UBQ621Z) and a Fuso truck (UBA673K) happened at around 4am. The bus driver, allegedly attempting to overtake other vehicles, drifted into the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming Fuso truck.

“The impact resulted in the death of six passengers, including the bus driver, and injured 37 others on the bus and the driver of the Fuso truck,” said Kananura in a press briefing at police headquarters in Kampala on Monday.

The Territorial Traffic Police responded promptly, rushing victims to nearby clinics for medical attention and conveying the deceased to Kyanzanga Hospital mortuary.

“We continue to urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic incidents, especially when overtaking. It’s very dangerous to overtake when there are many vehicles, on hills, on bends, and especially at night when visibility is not good,” Kananura appealed.

He said both vehicles have been towed to Kyanzanga Police Station for further investigation.
