Gulu -The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) is emerging as a leader in sustainable agriculture, driven by innovative projects that boost food security and self-sufficiency.
In line with President Yoweri Museveni’s 2022 directive to produce food and animal feed for security, UPS is showcasing its commitment to sustainable development through its agricultural initiatives.
Following the presidential directive, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries allocated 30,000 acres to UPS, enhancing its efforts to drive sustainable development and food security in Uganda.
Senior Commissioner of Prisons Frank Baine recently led a high-level delegation, including Commissioner of Prisons Alex Oloka and Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Margaret Orik Obonyo, to inspect progress at the UG. Prison Farm – Lugore and Aswa Group of Prisons in Gulu.
The team toured cutting-edge facilities, witnessing innovative techniques and technologies that enhance crop and animal production.
They also visited the nearly complete 3,000 Metric Tonnes Silo at Lugore, a state-of-the-art facility set to significantly boost grain production and storage capacity in Northern Uganda.
The UPS Livestock Productivity Project is revolutionizing cattle farming, animal breeding, and beef production.
At Aswa Group of Prisons, the team assessed various agricultural programs, including maize grain production, which has yielded multiple harvests.
UPS’s agricultural complex is becoming a model for sustainable development, demonstrating the service’s dedication to innovation and self-sufficiency.
By leading the way in sustainable agriculture, UPS is fulfilling President Museveni’s directive and setting a positive example for others to follow.
