The Indian community in Uganda is seeking recognition as a tribe in the country, with a call to lawmakers to expedite a constitutional amendment to make it happen.

This was revealed by Dr. Sudhir Rupaleria, Consul of Nepal to Uganda and one of the country’s most successful businessmen, while officiating at the 7th Pan-African Pyramid Global Awards (PAP Global Awards) 2024 and 10th Anniversary Bonfire Dinner held in Kampala on Saturday.

Born on January 17, 1956, Dr. Rupaleria is the chairman and majority shareholder of the Ruparelia Group, a vast business empire with interests in insurance, education, broadcasting, real estate, floriculture, hotels, and resorts. With a net worth of $800 million, he is one of Uganda’s wealthiest individuals, employing over 10,000 people across his various ventures.

“Recognizing the Indian community as a Ugandan tribe is long overdue. It’s a matter of respect, unity, and honor for a community that has contributed significantly to Uganda’s growth and development for over 120 years,” Dr. Rupaleria said.

At the event, Dr. Rupaleria was awarded the Lifetime Achiever (Business Entrepreneur) award for his exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, which has had a profound impact on the continent. The award recognized his remarkable contributions to business and entrepreneurship, inspiring a new generation of leaders and entrepreneurs across Africa.

The event, which celebrated African unity and integration, also honored President Yoweri Museveni with the “African Revolutionary Leader of All Times” award for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the continent.

The PAP Global Awards recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the Pan-African movement, celebrating their achievements and commitment to the continent’s growth and development.
