Kampala – The Electoral Commission say they are still within the timeframe to gazette the results of the Kawempe North by-election won by National Unity Platform’s Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola.
This comes in response to Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s call for the gazette before swearing in the new member.
Among had earlier emphasized the importance of waiting for the gazette before swearing in the new member. “When a member wins, I wait for a gazette. When I get a gazette, that’s when I swear in the member,” she said, adding that she needs to hear from the Electoral Commission before proceeding.
In response, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi assured that the commission is on track to gazette the results within the stipulated timeframe. “The law, specifically sections 58 and 59 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, dictates the timeline for gazetting election results,” explained Mucunguzi.
He further clarified that the returning officer has seven days to submit a report to the commission, followed by 48 hours for the commission to publish and gazette the results.
Once the results are gazetted, Nalukoola will be sworn in as the new member representing Kawempe North to succeed Muhammad Ssegirinya who died recently
