Mbarara – In response to a string of attacks on students of Bishop Stuart University (BSU), the police have carried out operations that led to the arrest of 22 suspects.
According to police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, the suspects including 18 males and four females are currently in police custody.
One of the most recent and brutal attacks was on Alex Abaho, a first-year Bachelor of Business Administration student. Abaho was assaulted at around 2am on Tuesday last week at New Age Hostel by armed assailants who broke into his room, demanding money and his phone. The attackers hacked him in the face, causing severe injuries that led to the loss of his right eye. They fled with some of his belongings, including a cable and chargers, leaving him seriously wounded.
The recent attacks on BSU students have raised concerns about the safety and security of students in the area.
The police have assured the public that they are taking all necessary measures to ensure the students’ safety and security.
“We want to reaffirm that we shall be providing adequate security to the students of BSU, but equally, whenever there are any suspicious activities or persons around their areas, we always request that information is passed to our police so that these operations are carried out,” Kituuma said during a press conference at Police headquarters in Kampala on Monday.
